Until the mid-1950s, the carpet beater was present in every household to clean mats and carpets, until it was gradually replaced by the vacuum cleaner. Yet the carpet beater remains unrivaled for properly cleaning door and car mats and carpets. For this purpose, it is best to hang them outside over the washing line or fence, after which they can be thoroughly tapped out. In Germany, houses used to even have a special rod for this (Teppichstange). In the Netherlands and Belgium, the carpet beater was also used to spank children. Hence the expression to get knocked. Something Ian Fleming, writer of the first James Bond Casino Royale, must have remembered. James Bond is being tackled here with a carpet beater. But above all, the carpet beater is simply the best for cleaning carpets and it also uses no electricity.
